Microsoft Ignite is a premier event that showcases the latest technological innovations and breakthroughs across the Microsoft ecosystem. This year, Microsoft announced upwards of 80 new products, including new capabilities in Microsoft 365 Copilot, additions to the Copilot + AI stack and new Copilot+ devices offerings.

While several key announcements can prove to be game-changing for industries come 2025, in this article, we will cover the key updates announced for Microsoft Fabric. Build insight-driven intelligent apps with autonomous Fabric Databases.

The latest Fabric workload, Fabric Databases, is a new class of databases that combines transactional and analytical workloads and simplifies AI application development with intuitive and autonomous databases that provision in seconds and are secured by default. The SQL database in Microsoft Fabric is the first database engine introduced to the platform, offering a unified data experience that integrates AI across both operational and analytical data. In public preview now.

AI Functions in Microsoft Fabric:

This new feature has made it simple for users to execute text-related tasks easily with minimal coding in Fabric. Notebook users can efficiently handle tasks with text summarization, categorization, sentiment analysis, grammar correction and more. These functions streamline the API for popular AI enrichments, making it easier to implement them with less code In public preview now.

OneLake catalog:

functions as a unified solution that helps users to manage as well as govern their data estate, including structured and unstructured data, lakehouses, warehouses, ML models, notebooks, reports and more. The OneLake catalog customer experience comes with two easy-to-navigate tabs:

  • Explore (now generally available): Users can access and manage all their data in a single centralized location, with filters for domains, item types, owners, endorsements, tags, and more. Users can double-click on a data item to take actions on the data or analyse description, data lineage, permissions, and activity.
  • Govern (will be released into public preview at the beginning of 2025): Users can review the overview status of their data, which allows them to quickly gather information on endorsements, data labelling, and data type and get recommended actions to improve their data for better quality and compliance.

Sustainability data solutions in Microsoft Fabric:

Sustainability is a key priority for businesses in 2024-25. Businesses could use a hand in analyzing and reporting their sustainability goals. Attendees were beyond pleased when Microsoft announced the general availability of Sustainability data solutions in Microsoft Fabric. This new feature will facilitate businesses to compute, analyze, and disclose their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) metrics with unparalleled ease and precision. Sustainability data solutions in Microsoft  Fabric provide a comprehensive suite of tools that include prebuilt and preconfigured resources such as data lakes, notebooks, and dashboards. These resources are built to capture, process, aggregate, and present data for different ESG scenarios, simplifying the management of sustainability data for organizations.
